I am pleased to welcome – beginning tomorrow – CEP’s first guest blogger, Bob Hughes of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Bob is completing his 20-year tenure at RWJF at the end of February. He has served that Foundation ably in many roles – most recently as Vice President and Chief Learning Officer.
I came to know Bob in his role as a member of CEP’s Advisory Board and regard him as one of the most thoughtful people in the foundation world on questions of effectiveness and impact. He has provided me – and CEP – much wise counsel over the years and his incisive questions and insights have shaped and strengthened our work.
I invited Bob to address any issues he chose that were related to effectiveness and impact. My hope was that he would be candid and direct and draw on his significant experience. He did not disappoint, and tomorrow will mark the first in a series of five posts that I hope will provoke serious reflection and discussion.
In the interest of full disclosure, let me note here that RWJF provides general operating support of $500,000 annually to CEP as a lead member of our “Funders Collaborative” that came together to provide more than $7 million in support to CEP over a four-year period. I think you will see when reading Bob’s posts that his support of CEP does not stop him from calling it like he sees it.
And that is as it should be.
