Performance Assessment Worksheet

It is difficult and costly for funders to measure the social benefit of the myriad grants they make. Therefore, we recommend funders track indicators that serve as proxies for social benefit and inform their understanding of the positive changes they are creating relative to the resources they have invested. While there is no definitive proof of overall social impact, indicators serve as useful guidance to management seeking to improve performance.

This worksheet is intended to help foundation staff and boards establish appropriate indicators of performance in four areas: achieving impact, setting the agenda/strategy, managing operations, and optimizing governance.

More information on this framework, which was informed by interviews and surveys of foundation CEOs, trustees, and grantees can be found in Indicators of Effectiveness: Understanding and Improving Foundation Performance.
