CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY RESEARCH FEATURED IN WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM REPORT

Boston, MA: The Center for Effective Philanthropy's research on assessing foundation performance is featured in a new report, "Philanthropy Measures Up," released today at the World Economic Forum by the Global Leaders for Tomorrow (GLT). CEP's work is highlighted as "perhaps the most promising and ambitious effort in benchmarking the effectiveness of philanthropy" among "a growing number of non-profit service organizations... involved in the stampede to measure outcomes."

According to the GLT, "the stark reality is that less than 50% of donors measure the effectiveness of their giving, yet there are tremendous innovative initiatives... to measure the impact of philanthropy." Their report summarizes work in the field to date, citing 20 resources in measuring philanthropy, and provides a summary of best practices.

CEP's work on comparative assessment of foundation performance, as informed by grantee perceptions, is highlighted as particularly useful to the field. CEP is currently undertaking a second round of surveys of approximately 6,000 grantees of more than 25 of the largest private and community foundations in the U.S. Survey results will expand and deepen CEP's data set, allowing foundations to see their performance on several dimensions relative to other foundations.

Also highlighted by the GLT report is CEP's research on linking strategy to performance measures. As detailed in CEP's publication, "Indicators of Effectiveness," foundations that tailor their approach to their strengths will be more effective, even if this tailored approach necessitates trade-offs in funding different fields.
