ROCKEFELLER BROTHERS FUND PRESIDENT STEPHEN B. HEINTZ JOINS BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY

Cambridge, MA …Stephen B. Heintz, President of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF), was elected to a three-year term on the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s Board of Directors, effective April 1, 2005.

Heintz has been involved with CEP since its early stages. “Stephen Heintz has been an engaged and important advisor to CEP over the past several years in his roles as a member of our Advisory Board and the leader of a foundation that has provided us with operating support, “said Phil Buchanan, Executive Director. “He is deeply committed to the mission of the Center for Effective Philanthropy and, as the President of a significant international funder, will bring a crucial perspective to the Board of Directors.”

“Stephen Heintz will bring valuable insight and experience to CEP’s Board as someone who has made performance assessment and improvement a high priority in his leadership of the RBF,” said Phil Giudice, Chair of CEP’s Board. “He also brings important perspectives from his experience as the founder of a foundation-funded nonprofit.”

RBF, a roughly $700 million foundation with a mission to promote social change that contributes to a more just, sustainable and peaceful world, has programs focused on four themes: Democratic Practice; Sustainable Development; Peace and Security; and Human Advancement. Since assuming the presidency of the RBF, Heintz has been a strong voice for foundations to develop higher standards of performance. He has also urged foundations and nonprofits to be bolder and more risk-embracing in their work.

Prior to joining the RBF in 2001, Heintz was Founding President of Demos: A Network for Ideas and Action, a public policy research and advocacy organization working to enhance the vitality of American democracy. He has also held crucial public policy roles both on the international and state level, serving as Executive Vice President of the EastWest Institute in Prague, Czech Republic, and as Commissioner of the Department of Income Maintenance (Social Welfare) for the State of Connecticut, where he developed a track record as a policy analyst and cabinet official. He has published articles in The International Herald, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal Europe and several books and journals.

The RBF has been a funder of the Center for Effective Philanthropy since 2002.
