JOEL L. FLEISHMAN JOINS THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY

Boston, MA: The Center for Effective Philanthropy has elected Joel L. Fleishman, senior advisor to The Atlantic Philanthropies and director of the Sam and Ronnie Heyman Center for Ethics, Public Policy and the Professions at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University, to its Board of Directors.

Mr. Fleishman has an extensive and prominent career as a foundation leader; scholar and author focusing on law, public policy, ethics and nonprofit organizations; university administrator; and nonprofit and corporate board member.

"Joel Fleishman's deep experience and exceptional reputation as a scholar and leader of nonprofit organizations and foundations will add enormously to the work of CEP," said Phil Buchanan, Executive Director of The Center for Effective Philanthropy.

Mr. Fleishman served as president of The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) from 1993 to 2001. He joined the Duke faculty in 1971, was the founding director of what is now The Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, and has served the university as vice president, senior vice president and first senior vice president. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles reflecting his long-standing interest in ethics, public policy and not-for-profit organizations.

He currently serves as vice chairman of the Board of Directors of the Urban Institute, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation, and as trustee of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; the Artscroll Mesorah Foundation; the American Hebrew Academy; and the Partnership for Public Service. He also is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the External Advisory Board of The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard, and the Governing Council of the Rockefeller Archive Center.

He joins other members of CEP's Board of Directors: Jonathan Cohen, co-founder of the New Israel Fund and the Jewish Funders Network; Mark Fuller, chairman and CEO of the Monitor Group; Phil Giudice, management consultant and philanthropist; Mark Kramer, foundation expert and managing director of the Foundation Strategy Group; Michael Porter, Bishop William Lawrence university professor, Harvard University; and David Salem, president and CEO of The Investment Fund for Foundations.
