THE CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE PHILANTHROPY SECURES NEW ROUND OF FUNDING

Boston, MA: The Center for Effective Philanthropy has secured a new round of foundation funding, led by a 3-year $900,000 operating support grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies. Along with The Atlantic Philanthropies, CEP's other initial funders, Surdna and The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, have also renewed their support - Packard with programmatic support for research on foundation performance measures and Surdna with operating support.

Several new funders are also supporting CEP's operations, including Rockefeller Brothers Fund and The Ford Foundation. The Boston Foundation has provided support for a seminar on foundation performance assessment, to be held November 14-15.

"This new funding from our initial funders as well as new funders, represents a major step for CEP," said Phil Buchanan, Executive Director. "It allows us to build on our initial research initiative, the Foundation Performance Metrics Pilot Study, and undertake new, related initiatives that serve our mission of providing the management and governance tools needed to define, assess, and improve overall foundation performance."

Specifically, CEP will be working to build on the research conducted for the Pilot Study by:

  • working with its large, private foundation CEO advisors to refine metrics
  • deepening its research on foundation performance assessment through new data collection and analysis
  • expanding its data on grantee perceptions of foundations, which allow foundation leaders to understand relative grantee perceptions of foundation performance
  • broadening its performance assessment research to other foundation segments, such as community foundations and smaller foundations
  • and delivering education programs aimed at foundation CEOs and trustees

"Foundation leaders are increasingly seeking to assess and then improve the performance of their foundations," said Buchanan. "CEP exists to help them in this difficult endeavor. Our funders recognize the tremendous benefit that can be derived from this process."
